ABOUT

ICTUSCORDIS is a series of intimate audiovisual biofeedback performances with the human heart as the main subject.

The series is dedicated to the research of sound biodata and various applications of biofeedback.

Human heart in the series significantly exceeds the metaphorical field of performing with the heart, as it is an actual, living, physical, musical and visual instrument.

Heartbeat is placed in different contexts, thus transcending the separation that man experiences in the Anthropocene epoch due to the loss of contact with himself and consequently with nature. The author seeks the answer in the ultimate intimacy, which he addresses with a bare heart. He places the subject in a space of inescapable truth from where a subject can no longer escape.

Based on audiovisual imagery derived from heartbeat and biological feedback loops, the series depicts an intimate relationship between the audience and the collective heartbeat.

By manipulating the sound of the heart, the primary force of human life, the author tries to dynamically amplify the connections between the psychic and physical body and interpersonal relationships.

With the series Ictuscordis, Januš Aleš Luznar researches the possibilities and consequences of  biofeedback manipulation.

The series encourages the awakening of consciousness through listening and observing - to find yourself in the heartbeat of another is to recognise the connection between all.

'' real magic happens when you become an instrument yourself ''

ICTUSCORDIS

synchronicity "2022"

The heart and brainwaves of two guests are in the foreground for the first time.

The author simultaneously connects their bodies to devices for recording of the acoustic heart and brain wave activity, to dynamically amplify the relationship between heartbeat, brain activity and mutual relationships with their hearts and  brain waves.

EEG data is recorded anonymously during the sessions for later analytical research of the connections between psychophysical processes and the influence of manipulated biological feedback loops of the heartbeat.

The sessions offer an intimate, transcendental experience into visitors own hearts (and the hearts of another participant)

''memoriae'' 2021

The fourth part of the research series, memoriae music album, draws on the past manifestations of the ictuscordis project.

Heartbeat. The contracting and relaxing of the main organ of the cardiovascular system. A pulse – expansions and contractions – that produces a particular rhythm. A rhythm that can be steady, uneven, slow, excited, calm, jerky. A variety of emotions can be gathered from a simple sequence of heartbeats.Januš Aleš Luznar has been thinking about how to amplify the heartbeat and develop electronic music using only the sounds of the heart for years. In 2018, he started exploring the impact of manipulated sound on the functioning of the heart by using contact microphones and a special sound amplifier. Luznar treats the sound of the heart as a simultaneous instrument that plays on its own and never ceases to emit sounds. An instrument he can train, strengthen and control through different emotions, sound-mixing techniques and breathing. Listening to the sounds of the heart tells us about a person’s physical health and potential cardiovascular problems; Luznar, however, uses these sounds to explore the relationship between the psychic and physical parts of the human body. By way of a biofeedback method, Luznar very precisely and in real time adds effects to the sounds of the heart, thus manipulating their intensity and taking the listeners on a journey through a variety of emotional states. The result is an intimate, ambient immersion into the universe of the human heart.

“ICTUSCORDIS‘‘ variatio ’’ 2020
A small intimate immersive audiovisual experience in which the author uses the hearts of individual guests.
In this ''variatio'', synthesizers are an addition to primarily used audio effects from the first part of the series ''modulatio''.
This performance is dedicated to research of the impact, of manipulative biofeedback loops on people with various professional and social backgrounds.

ICTUSCORDIS '' dialogue '' 2019
Audiovisual contemporary dance performance based on the heartbeats of a dancer and the author.
At the forefront of the performative research is the creation of a space of references in the case of rhythmic coincidence and the synchronisation of two heartbeats.
Authors acoustic sound of the heartbeat is used as a musical instrument, whilst the dancers is connected via a heart rate sensor to control visual images.
They explore how manipulated biofeedback loops can be used as well as movements, to control their heart rates. They are searching for a space of synchronicity and harmony.

ICTUSCORDIS '' modulatio '' 2018
Intimate audio visual performance, where the artist invites the audience to a sacred space of artistic and spiritual feedback loop of his heartbeat.
With the manipulated biofeedback method, combining the acoustic sound of his heartbeat, sound processing modules, audio feedback and visual stimuli, he changes his heart rate and triggers the shifting of his and the audiences emotions. The effect of shifting is the consequence of psychoacoustics in specific sound, visual images, and the unconscious mind and body communication.
Invariably performed live, with no pre-recorded samples, it is an immersive journey through a universe of ones primary emotions.
Performances are followed by Q&A.
